From Small Time to the TV Screen embodies Peacemaker perfectly as Season 2 Of Peacemaker approaches. At one he was the lowest of the low in the DC Comic Universe. I would say that even people who read a lot of comics didn’t even give Peacemaker a second thought. Even though he did make some minor appearances. His comic run is interesting but also underwhelming lets look at the best comics to read before the new seasons.
It also seemed a lot through the comic universe that the Vigilante was the more popular character having a 50 issues comic run in the late 80s and Peacemaker not really having his own series and being very much a B character throughout his comic lifespan. It was only when James Gunn put him into Suicide Squad and then his own TV show Peacemaker that the character has grown into a major player. This may also be due to the great performance of John Cena as Peacemaker. With the Season 2 of Peacemaker coming out on the 21st August it’s time too look at From Small Time To TV Screen: What To Read Before Season 2 of Peacemaker.
Fightin’ 5 #40
Firstly you can’t have a guide without the first appearance of the character. Peacemaker makes his first appearance in Fightin’ 5 #40. He is introduced as a character of similar design and like this name a maker of peace. However unlike this current version he has a lot less comedic feel and more just I must finish the battle no matter what for peace. The series of Fightin’ 5 only lasted one more issue before cancelling and Peacemaker does continue for a short while as a mini series in ’60s. Weirdly enough, after that Peacemaker is a minor character for a while.
Vigilante #37
This one may be surprising to many of you when going into my deep dive right into the core of Peacemaker’s I found that the vigilante had a comic book series. Something I had never thought about before but Vigilante at one point looked not only to have his own series running longer than Peacemaker it seemed like he was the more popular. Peacemaker does however make an appearance in some of these issues one of them being #37. In this issue we see both Vigilante and Peacemaker more in their character from the show. Alongside this it shows them as enemies and feels like the early steps into what they are in the show.
Blue Beetle Vol. 1: Shellshocked #1-6
Even though this shows Peacemaker as a more serious and near to no humour type of character. In a sort of weird dynamic between Blue Beetle and Peacemaker. What may evolve into a sort mentor type role for the Blue Beetle. However always kind of on edge because of the Blue Beetle’s alien technology. Peacemaker doesn’t have his classic look in this going for a more serious look and casual. However kind of boring the only reason I put in this in here, is because I could actually see the current Peacemaker TV show version and Blue Beetle have a interesting future together.
Suicide Squad #1-6
This is when we start getting the Peacemaker we know. He is obsessed with peace and follows order no matter what like in the Suicide Squad movie. It doesn’t have the over the top kind comedic feel that the show has. It does though so much good crazy stuff going to keep you excited it’s a Suicide Squad comic at its core it’s crazy and fun full of other fun character as well. It’s a good read. I don’t think many of the other characters in this series will appear in the show but we are going down this kind of more serious route. I think this is the tone it will go down with the comedic route as I think it could be molded together.
The Multiversity
Maybe one of the best comics with the appearance of Peacemaker. However still this isn’t the Peacemaker we have come to know. The tone of this comic is pretty serious and dark. Even though I don’t think Peacemaker will ever be this kind of character. It’s possible we will see different versions of the Peacemaker and we might see this one in season 2 of Peacemaker.
Peacemaker Tries Hard! #1-6
This is one of the closest possible comics to the Peacemaker TV show. It has all of the characteristics of the show from the TV show. Even down to the big ego and no one knowing who the Peacemaker is. It really is crazy going from the early variations of Peacemaker to this. It’s such a massive leap for the character. He also has a cute dog.
It’s hard to find good Peacemaker comics with their really not being many. The character has only blown up due to the movies and TV Show and it has only been like 4 years since his big screen appearance so for the comic character. We are still in the early stages and look at it. There is some big tweaks to be fixed. I think maybe the best variation of the Peacemaker is in Suicide Squad and I don’t think he works well in the comics by himself that much but as part of an anti hero or more villain group he works really well and i hope they continue that sort route for the character in the future hopefully in both film and Comics maybe even TV show in the future.
